19 Signs You Grew Up In The 90’s

by

Yesterday this was doing the rounds on Facebook. Those songs all came out 20 years ago, in 1997. It started me off on a massive nostalgia trip. I also realised that I know pretty much all of those songs off by heart. In 1997 I turned 14, and I was in secondary school. We had a youth club at our school which had disco nights every month, which is definitely one reason I still know most of the lyrics to those. But apart from music here are some other things that show you grew up in the 90’s.

  • You were either team Sega or team Nintendo. I have, and always probably will be team Nintendo. I had both a SNES and an original gameboy, both of which I still own today!! Tetris, Mario kart and Aladdin were my favourite games to play. Then I became obsessed with Pokemon and I still am today.

  • You could do the dance to both of these
  • You can sing Ice Ice baby, the whole theme tune to Fresh Prince or Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It.
  • Pogs. Ok I’m hoping this isn’t just me but I was obsessed with pogs in primary school. In fact the whole school was. All over the playground there would be groups of kids slamming these things down trying to win the shinys.

  • Saturday mornings consisted of waking up, and putting on kids tv. But it wasn’t like kids tv today, there wasn’t any specific kids channel, nope it was all on BBC and ITV. SM:TV, CD:UK, Live and Kicking, Kenan and Kel, Clarissa explains it all. Sabrina, Pokemon, Saturday mornings were great.
  • You probably wore any of the following clothing brands. Adidas, Kappa, NafNaf, Gap, Morgan De Toi, Skechers, Baby G, Kickers or anything from Tammy Girl. As you got older and more edgy you probably moved on to crop tops, combat trousers, bodysuits and bomber jackets. Or if you were like me and entered teen goth/grunge you ended up in velvet, flannel shirts, massive baggy jeans. I also wore a lot of plastic bracelets, plastic chokers which have totally made a comeback and mood rings.
  • Inflatable furniture and backpacks. Why, why why? I’m not quite sure what started this trend but it was one I jumped on board with. I loved my inflatable backpack, even though it was completely useless.

  • You longed for a wardrobe like Cher from Clueless. Seriously, how good was it and why has no one invented it since?

  • You had your heart-broken by the Spice Girls and Take That.
  • You know which side of the Take That / East 17 and the Blur/Oasis battle you were on…and you probably still hold firm to it.
  • Blank tapes and videos were sacred and usually used to record the Sunday Night Top 40 or your favourite band on the Smash Hits Poll Winners’ Party.
  • You can remember the next line to this: “Have you ever, ever felt like this. When strange things happen…”

  • Your first alcoholic drink was probably a bottle of Hooch, Bacardi Breezer or Smirnoff Ice. In your local park.
  • Ricki Lake, Jerry Springer and Maury were way better than Jeremy Kyle.
  • The sadness you felt when you ended up losing your tamagotchi and it died because you didn’t feed/clean/exercise it.
  • You were there at the beginning. harry potter books
  • Fun house looked like so much fun. Although being gunged maybe not so much.
  • The 90’s was a classic time for films – Titanic, Clueless, The Matrix, Home Alone, Jurassic Park, Toy story. Forrest Gump, The Lion King, Independence Day.
  • Floppy Discs.

There are so many other things I could include, I would probably get to 50! I was definitely a child of the 90’s. Here’s a playlist I’ve put together on Spotify of a few songs I consider 90’s classics. I would love you to check it out, and let me know if there is anything you think I’m missing from the playlist or this post.

Keep Calm and Carry On Linking Sunday

  1. Epic. I had to show my wife who is American some SMTV:Live stuff on You Tube so she would understand some of the stuff I grew up with. #kcacols

  2. I’m feeling all nostaligic now! When live and kicking wasn’t on, it was fully booked. I absolutely loved the racoons!

And pogs! It was all we did every break time. And the kids with metal slammers would 1) dent the pogs and 2) win em all anyway.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane 🙂

  6. Well I wasn’t a child of the 90s, more a young adult, but I remember all this stuff! Has made me feel very nostalgic…I remember loving my Global Hypercolour T Shirts! #KCACOLS

  7. I love stuff like this! It’s great to look back and remember stuff you’d forgotten. Although I was born in the 90’s I would have only been 6 in 1997 so the majority of my nostalgic memories are probably from the 00’s. I do however remember having an inflatable back pack and Harry Potter been released #KCACOLS

  8. Oh my gosh I was 11 when that Whigfield single came out. It was the first ‘tape’ I ever bought, on a shopping trip for yet more Morgan/Tammy Girl stuff and to look in the window of HSamuels at the baby g watch I REALLY wanted. Defo team blur and Take That to this very day. WOW this takes me back!! #kcacols

  9. This is a great list thanks for helping me take a walk down memory lane… I just heard Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch on the radio yesterday and it reminded me of the early 90s… #KCACOLS

  10. OMG I love this post! This is so me! I’m so stuck in the 90’s. My husband and I mostly listen to 90’s music, we’ve been to about 8 90’s boyband reunions in the past few years, we love to watch cheesy 90’s romcoms on date-night, and in my study we have a WORKING original Nintendo, complete with about 20 of my original games – that still get’s played (Kickle Cubicle and Bubble Boble were two of my favourites alongside Mario!). We’ve just started introducing our little man to some classic TV shows too – Though for some reason, he seems to prefer Mr Tumble… We’ll get there! Haha. #KCACOLS

  11. Hah! I love this. Nodding along with so many of these. Yes I dressed in anything from Tammy Girl and Top Kids. I also wore Wallaby shoes and Kickers! Definitely got my heart broken by Take That and Spice Girls. Good memories! #KCACOLS

  12. So many memories! I love this post! I was definitely (and still am!) Team Sega, Take That and Blur!! I can still remember the dances. At my brother’s wedding last summer I was teaching some of them the moves to Saturday Night and the Macarena!
Thank you for the trip down memory lane 🙂 🙂
