Camping in the New Forest

by

Back at the end of April, we took a spontaneous camping trip to the New Forest with Jesse’s brother and his girlfriend. It was so unplanned that we didn’t actually know where we were going until we were on the road! As we were on the road we booked a campsite just on the edge of the New Forest in Ashurst, not far from Southampton. It was perfect for us. We went just after the Easter Holidays and the bank holiday weekend so it was really quiet.

The campsite was just what we wanted. There was a shower block with hot water, toilets and washing up facilities. It would also be great for people without a car as it is right by Ashurst train station. There were a few other campers, mostly in campers and caravans. We seemed to be the only silly ones in tents. The weather during the days was actually really nice. But as soon as the sun went down it was absolutely freezing. We probably underestimated just how cold it would be. After being to various festivals and camping over the last 15 years you would think we would be prepared for any weather!!

There were wild ponies just wandering around the site which was amazing to see. On the first morning they all came galloping across the field we were camped in and headed straight into the forest. There were also cows on the site which Clem really liked. We went on a few walks in the forest, exploring and climbing all over the fallen trees. During one of the walks, we came across a group of deer. We made sure not to disturb them. We watched them for a while until they ran off further into the forest.

The weather decided to turn so it was a good job there was pub right next to the campsite. In fact it’s so close it has its own entrance from the field. There was a great play area which Clem enjoyed. The food was pretty good too. On the last day we drove to Beaulieu for a cream tea and a walk. Along the way we passed through some beautiful countryside. None of us had ever been to the New Forest before but I think we will all be going back again. It was absolutely beautiful. We went past lots more ponies and donkeys, some sheep and cows.

I absolutely loved having a break from social media and real life for a bit. After the first night our phones went dead, which was probably a bit silly as it meant we couldn’t actually contact anyone. So we did manage to secretly charge them in the pub or as we were driving along. But apart from that, it was nice being at one with nature.

I like the night. Without the dark, we’d never see the stars.

Usually one of the bits I hate the most about camping is waking up in the middle of the night needing the toilet. However this time I really didn’t mind as the sight that greeted me was amazing!I don’t think I’ve ever seen quite so many stars since living in North Devon. The sky was just full of them. It was a shame that Clem didn’t get to see them but there was no way I was waking her up. With all the running around, fresh air and climbing she did – she needed her sleep!

Has anyone else ever been camping in the new forest? I would highly recommend it, although maybe wait for slightly warmer weather. Or just take plenty of layers and blankets.

  1. It looks like you had a real adventure. I haven’t been to the New Forest before as it’s a bit of a way from us but I love the idea of wild ponies greeting you as you wake up in the morning! I quite fancy camping with our littles too! Maybe in the warmer weather if we ever do get a consistent spell haha. Thanks for linking with #DreamTeam x

  2. I have been toying with the idea of taking the boys camping but whilst I am pregnant I am definitely putting that one on hold! However, I may consider glamping! You got some lovely photos <3 #dreamteam

  3. This looks like a lovely camping trip- even if it was chilly! I love the view of the stars when you are camping, so amazing to see when there is no light pollution. I have been camping in the New Forest. Its a brilliant place to explore.

  4. We used to camp all the time as kids but I haven’t yet taken my own family camping. It is something we have thought about but think we will wait a year or two until everone is toilet trained at night!
