We read to Clementine every night as part of her bedtime routine, recently we were very lucky to be sent a copy of Pom Pom the Champion by Sophy Henn. You might already be familiar with Sophy’s work as she was the 2015 official World Book Day illustrator and Where Bear? was shortlisted for the 2015 Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. This is also the second book featuring Pom Pom, the first one being Pom Pom Gets The Grumps.
As soon as I opened the parcel I knew straight away Clem would like the book. It is very appealing to both children and adults. The colours are really bright, the text is well positioned and the illustrations are lovely. Everyone loves pandas especially one as cute as Pom Pom. All of the other characters are great as well, I especially enjoyed the librarian.
We sat down at bedtime to read it and immediately Clem was pointing at the pictures and making noises, always a good sign! The story is great, one day when Pom Pom is bored his mum suggests playing a game and Pom Pom quickly discovers just how much he likes to win. He soon learns that being the winner isn’t always the best. I have to say Clementine is a little young to fully understand the story at the moment but she certainly likes looking at all of the pages. I couldn’t help but laugh at one page which featured Pom Pom stood looking rather bored in a very messy room surrounded by all of his toys as my lounge was in a similar state.
We are definitely big fans of Pom Pom and Sophy here and I hope there will be more to come from both of them.
Pom Pom the Champion by Sophy Henn is out on the 3rd September £6.99, published by Puffin and is also available in hardback.
