Now that Clem is getting older her taste in books is changing. We are moving on from Peppa Pig and onto more exciting ones. For her birthday our friends got her a big set of Meg & Mog books – 10 all together. I remember them from when I was little so it’s nice to be able to share them with her now.
Every single night we read with Clem before bedtime, sometimes 2 or 3 books so I decided to share the top 5 of this summer with you all.
1 – Oi Frog by Kes Gray and Jim Field.
Cats sit on mats, hares sit on chairs, mules sit on stools and gofers sit on sofas, but Frog does not want to sit on a log! Jam-packed with animals and silliness, this original rhyming story is guaranteed to have your child laughing. Clem loves the rhymes and it’s also fun to read which is always good.
2 – I want my hat back by Jon Klassen.
This has probably been the hit of our summer. Clem actually knows this book off by heart now as we have read it that much! She even goes around asking people if they have seen her hat. It’s a funny story about a bear who has lost his hat. He goes for a walk asking everyone if they have seen his hat. The illustrations are lovely as well.
3 – Alans Big, Scary Teeth by Jarvis.
We were already familiar with Jarvis, having read a previous book illustrated by him. Oddbods is one our favourites so I was really happy when we found this one. Alan is an alligator with a secret. Famed for his big, scary teeth, he sneaks into the jungle every day to scare the jungle animals. But after a long day of scaring, Alan likes nothing better than to run a warm mud bath and …..take out his false teeth, which nobody knows about!
4 – Meg and Mog
A complete children’s classic, originally from the 70’s, it’s been great sharing these with Clem. For her birthday our friends got her a set of Meg and Mog books so we’ve been working our way through them all. One thing I really like about these books is that the text is easy to read which means Clem can understand it too.
5 – Cat in the Hat
Again another classic. We actually got this at a car boot sale we went to recently. I used to love Dr Seuss books when I was growing up, so I’m hoping Clem will enjoy them as well. At the moment she just likes looking at the illustrations. But hopefully this will help her learn to read as she gets older.
Finally a bonus one, this one is new and only came out at the end of August – Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen.
We were lucky enough to be sent a copy of this to review. We’re going on a bear hunt is one of Clems all time favourite books so I was excited to get this one. Originally a spoken poem, it’s now been brought to life as a picture book with illustrations by Kevin Waldron. I really enjoyed reading this to Clem. It’s full of silly sounds and who doesn’t love a good chocolate cake! Clem certainly does.
Chocolate Cake by Michael Rosen is out now, priced £12.99 in hardback.
I want to read more with my daughter. Right now she has the tendency to snatch the book off me and chew it. Ah well. Got to keep trying! These books look fun and I hope to expand A’s English book collection.
