Best Films to Watch on Netflix

by

As I’ve mentioned quite a few times before I am a big fan of Netflix. Now I have seen a lot of bloggers mention that they are part of the Netflix Stream Team – I am not. I just love Netflix. These posts are in no way associated with them. I just like to share what we’ve been watching recently. My previous posts have focused on TV shows, so this one is all about films.

I’ve always been obsessed with watching films, ever since I was little. I definitely had my favourites that I would watch over and over again. Then once I was 18 I got a job in my local Blockbusters video store and my obsession grew from there. I’ve also worked in HMV which yep you guessed it, also didn’t help. Before Clem the cinema was one of our favourite places to go on a night out. Now we live closer to family then we have been going quite a lot recently. The last films we saw were Baby Driver and Dunkirk, both were really good and well worth watching.

Here is my list of my favourite films that are on Netflix.

  • Clueless (1995) – I’m fairly certain that every female around the age of 30 has seen this. If not where have you been! In case you haven’t seen it Clueless tells the story of Cher and Dionne, best friends who live in Beverly Hills. They are popular, rich, pretty, and charming. One day, they spot a new girl at school, Tai, and decide to do a makeover on her. They are very successful, but Cher realizes that she needed a makeover herself in a spiritual way. With this makeover, she learns about caring for others, going through pain, and love. This still remains one of my favourite films, the soundtrack is amazing and who didn’t want a wardrobe like Cher?

  • The Breakfast Club (1985) – Easily the oldest film on my list. They were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had nothing to say, but by 4 p.m., they had bared their souls to each other and become good friends. To the outside world they were simply a Brain, an Athlete, a Basket Case, a Princess, and a Criminal, but to each other, they would always be the Breakfast Club.

I will admit to being a bit of a John Hughes fan, and Netflix actually has quite a few. The Breakfast Club is easily my favourite film of his.

  • Fight Club (1999) – This was a film that I did see before I was supposed to. An insomniac office worker, looking for a way to change his life, crosses paths with a devil-may-care soap maker, forming an underground fight club that evolves into something much, much more. Based on a novel by Chuck Palahniuk and directed by David Fincher, Fight Club has become a classic. If you haven’t seen this, then seriously watch it now.
  • Hot Fuzz (2007) – This is one of my favourite films ever. I have been a huge fan of Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost since Spaced first came out. Forming part of the cornetto trilogy, Hot Fuzz tells the story of a police officer from London, who is sent to a sleepy town in Somerset. He is paired up with a local pc who shows him the locals. I would be amazed if you haven’t seen this, it’s on ITV2 every week! I think I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve seen it, I can quote it line for line.

You ain’t seen Bad Boys II?

  • Let the Right One In (2008) – Oskar, a bullied 12-year old, dreams of revenge. He falls in love with Eli, a peculiar girl. She can’t stand the sun or food and to come into a room she needs to be invited. Eli gives Oskar the strength to hit back but when he realizes that Eli needs to drink other people’s blood to live he’s faced with a choice. How much can love forgive?

This is the first horror film on my list. I used to be a little bit obsessed with vampires, I guess in a way I still kind of am. This film really took me by surprise. Don’t let the fact I’ve called it a horror film put you off. It’s also a romantic story. Yep I know that sounds even crazier, you don’t really get romantic horrors.  It is artistic, poetic, and in many ways a very profound movie exploring the nature of good and evil.

  • Sicario (2015) – When drug violence worsens on the USA Mexico border, the FBI sends an idealistic agent on a mission to eradicate a drug cartel responsible for a bomb that had killed members of her team. If you like thrillers and action then this is one for you.
  • The Nice Guys (2016) – In 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star. This is my first Gosling film on the list. This one really took me by surprise. It seemed to arrive onto Netflix very quickly. It was only in cinemas last year, usually I take that to be a bad sign. However not with this. We were laughing from about 5 minutes in and we didn’t stop. I don’t usually associate Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe with comedy but this works.
  • Drive (2011) – A mysterious man who has multiple jobs as a garage mechanic, a Hollywood stuntman and a getaway driver seems to be trying to escape his shady past as he falls for his neighbour – whose husband is in prison and who’s looking after her child alone. Meanwhile, his garage mechanic boss is trying to set up a race team using gangland money, which implicates our driver as he is to be used as the race team’s main driver. Our hero gets more than he bargained for when he meets the man who is married to the woman he loves.

Up until this film I didn’t get the Gosling effect. If you have seen this you will understand why that is weird. This is not Gosling in his usual swoon-worthy role. It’s a violent film, which I knew before seeing, however, I’m not so sure the 2 ladies who were in front of us in the cinema did. Their reaction to a certain scene has stayed with me since seeing it. They were rather shocked. After this though I became a fan. You might have also noticed this is my 2nd film with Ryan Gosling in, it was almost my third but I figured that might be too much. My third choice was The Big Short.

  • It Follows (2014)

Now this is the second horror film on my list. Before becoming a mum my list would have probably included a lot more. I used to love horror films. But since Clem I haven’t watched that many, apart from this. It was creepy, and turns out I have become a complete wimp now.

  • Magic Mike (2012) – Now yes I realise this might be an odd choice. A film about male strippers, and Channing Tatum. Actually that wasn’t what made me watch this, the director did. Now yes I realise that might sound odd but I really liked some of his previous films. So Magic Mike, well it’s basically about a male stripper who teaches a younger guy how to strip, make money and party. It’s actually based on Channing Tatum’s life before he became an actor.
